There is two types of routing, static and dynamic. In normal Server OS it have a inbuilt kernal router, but the problem here is admin job for students is a pretty tedious task. So for students, admin purpose it is better to do this project. It is better to do this in Linux.
As the linux has a good support to access the hardware and at the same time have a lots of api's.
Do static routing first.
Step 1) use pcap.h header file for reading the packet the hardware i mean the lan card.
Step 2) Sniff the packet and identify the packet and make a decision table according to the routin table.
Step 3) Inject it to the hardware after changin the IP for this we can use libnet api.
After this ur router is capable for a simple static routin. After this go for thr implementation of dyanamic.
i'm a 3rd year computer science student and i'm planning to work on virtual router for my mini project... so how do i go about it..? i got the idea behind your static routing need to know more on dynamic routing.. the format an so..
